22 teams, each plays the others twice - home and away - for a total of 42 games each, over 42 game weeks

Scoring points:
3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.

Table order:
1. points won; 2. points in head-to-head matches; 3. goal difference in hth matches; 4. total goal difference; 5. total goals scored; 6. fairplay ranking.

Relegation to the league:
3 teams from Primera División

Promotion from the league:
1-2 place: promoted to Primera División
3-6 place: enter a Promotion Play-off for 1 place in Primera División

Relegation from the league:
19-22 place: relegated to Segunda B

Promotion to the league:
4 teams from Segunda B

Promotion and relegation of II teams:
II teams cannot be promoted.
If any of them finishes on a promotion or a play-off spot, the next best team in the final table promotes or participates in the Promotion Play-off instead.
II teams are to be relegated regardless of their league position if their first team gets relegated to Segunda División.
In such case and if the II team is above the relegation zone, the best placed team in the relegation zone keeps its place in Segunda División instead.

Promotion Play-off:

4 teams from the Regular Season contest one place in Primera División in a knockout format.

Teams are paired according to their standings from the Regular Season:
best placed vs worst placed;
2nd best placed vs 3rd best placed.
Winners are decided over two legs.
The higher placed teams from the Regular Season host the second legs.

The two Semi-finals winners meet each other with the winner becoming the Promotion Play-off winner.
Winner is decided over two legs.
The higher placed team from the Regular Season hosts the second leg.

Tie-breakers for the Promotion Play-off ties:
1. aggregate score from the two legs, 2. away goals, 3. extra time, 4. better Regular Season placing.

winner: promoted to Primera División
