Toronto Wolfpack name McDermott as head coach

11 November 2018 21:16

Toronto Wolfpack have appointed Brian McDermott as their new head coach.

The former Leeds boss - who won four Super League Grand Finals, two Challenge Cups and a World Club Challenge during his reign at Headingley - takes over following Paul Rowley's departure.

McDermott was sacked by the struggling Rhinos in July but is now back working in the game at Championship level.

Toronto missed out on promotion to Super League in 2018 after losing 4-2 at home to London Broncos in the Million Pound Game.

"After being at the Rhinos for so long, I always knew I couldn’t just roll into any other club so easily," McDermott said.

"Toronto Wolfpack offers a challenge and ambition that not many other clubs have, already demonstrating this with how they’ve gone about getting to this stage.

"I'm excited on being a part of something that could genuinely be a game changer for rugby league in the UK."

McDermott also had a spell in charge of the United States national team and Brian Noble - Toronto's director of rugby - is confident the new man at the helm can steer the Wolfpack to the top flight.

"We are delighted to bring in a head coach of Brian's calibre, who we believe can lead us to the Super League," Noble told the club's website.

"Brian is a world-class coach and we are extremely excited that he has come on board with the Wolfpack.

"His track record in the game speaks for itself and having known Brian for many years, I know he has all the right attributes to take the club forward."

Toronto announced Rowley had left his position by mutual consent on Saturday.
