ICC apologises, launches investigation into controversial tweet

25 April 2018 15:58

The ICC issued an apology on Wednesday after a controversial tweet, apparently relating to Indian politics, was sent from its official account.

Many Twitter users reacted angrily after the ICC shared a video posted by another user that purported to show India's prime minister, Narendra Modi, with self-styled spiritual guru Asaram Bapu.

The post came on the day Asaram was handed a life sentence by an Indian court after being found guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl. Accompanying the video was a caption that read: "Sharing some old sweet memories between @narendramodi and Asaram."

It was not clear how the post had come to be shared via the ICC's official account, but the tweet was soon deleted and an apology followed.

A subsequent message from the governing body read: "ICC is dismayed at a non-cricket related tweet appearing on its Twitter feed earlier today.

"We would like to extend our sincere apologies to anyone who was offended during the short space of time it was up.

"We have launched an investigation into how this happened."
