Steve Smith felt Australia paid the price for falling short with the bat after Jason Roy's magnificent 180 inspired England to victory in Sunday's first one-day international.
Aaron Finch scored 107, while Marcus Stoinis (60) and Mitchell Marsh (50) added fifties as Australia posted 304-8 in Melbourne.
However, Roy put on a record-breaking 180 off 151 balls as England pulled off the highest ODI chase at the MCG to record a five-wicket win and bring about an upturn in fortunes following the 4-0 Test-series defeat.
Australia captain Smith credited England, but felt Australia should have added more to their tally.
"We probably left ourselves a few short, we lost a few wickets in the middle and that stopped us going from as hard as we liked at the back end," Smith said at the post-match presentation.
"If we got 340, 350 that's what we were after. We weren't able to do that, and we didn't start as well as we'd like with the ball either, they got off to a flying start.
"We tried everything we could to pull them back and take wickets but it wasn't our night."
On the contribution of Finch and Stoinis, he added: "Yeah, they played nicely. It would have been nice if Finchy was in for a bit longer and Stoinis could have been there at the end and got a few more, but they played well."
Smith added that changes are being considered for the second ODI in Brisbane on Friday, where Australia will look to level the five-match series.
"I think Patty [Pat Cummins] might be having a rest, I think Josh Hazlewood will be back," he said.
"We want to play better cricket and get a few wins in this format."
