England choose to bat as Warner, Marsh cleared to play for Australia

23 November 2017 00:45

England won the toss and elected to bat in the first Ashes Test as David Warner and Shaun Marsh were cleared to play for Australia in Brisbane.

Joe Root decided to bat on a Gabba wicket that is expected to provide a test early before flattening out, while there are some showers forecast throughout.

Under injury clouds, Warner (neck) and Marsh (back) were cleared for the series opener, with the latter to bat in the number six spot.

In-form opener Cameron Bancroft will make his debut, presented with his baggy green prior to the toss, while wicketkeeper Tim Paine will feature in a Test for the first time since 2010.

Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins make up an Australia pace attack tipped to do plenty of damage during the series.

England opted for Jake Ball ahead of Craig Overton in their side, with Mark Stoneman set to partner Alastair Cook at the top of the order.

Ball will form England's pace bowling attack with James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes, with Moeen Ali – and possibly Root – providing the spin option.

Moeen will bat at six, while Dawid Malan and James Vince hold onto their places after impressing in the tourists' warm-up matches.

Australia: David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith (c), Peter Handscomb, Shaun Marsh, Tim Paine, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon.
England: Alastair Cook, Mark Stoneman, James Vince, Joe Root (c), Dawid Malan, Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, Jake Ball, James Anderson.
