Finau ready to compete after freak ankle injury at Masters

25 April 2018 03:34

Augusta National almost claimed a second injury victim in as many years earlier this month, but Tony Finau is ready for a return.

Finau wrecked his ankle during the par-three contest leading up to the Masters while back-pedalling after a hole-in-one. Finau feared he would miss the tournament, but ultimately played and contended.

Last year, Dustin Johnson, the world's top-ranked golfer, slipped down the stairs of his rental home, injuring his back in the process. He missed the tournament.

Finau shared photos of his gruesome, bruised ankle after the Masters and it was surprising he could walk on it for four straight days.

He then took two weeks off to rest the injury, but he is back this week at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

"We will see how it feels when I get out there and play. I haven't been doing a lot of that, just a lot of rehab," Finau said, via pgatour.com.

Finau has already racked up seven top-17 finishes on the PGA Tour this season, including a pair of runner-up finishes.

While he is not yet ready to call his ankle healed, he believes it is healthy enough to allow him to compete.

"The journey is far from over as far as dealing with the foot," Finau said.

"I dealt with ankle injuries before, they can linger for a while; I don't think it's going to be 100 per cent for a while, but I do feel like it's ready to go and play and compete."
