Kansas City Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura has died in a car crash in the Dominican Republic aged 25, the franchise has confirmed.

No details of the incident have been officially clarified. Royals general manager Dayton Moore expressed his sorrow upon learning of Ventura's death.

Moore said in a statement: "Our prayers right now are with Yordano's family as we mourn this young man's passing.

"He was so young and so talented, full of youthful exuberance and always brought a smile to everyone he interacted with.

"We will get through this as an organisation, but right now is a time to mourn and celebrate the life of Yordano."

Signed by the Royals as an amateur free agent in 2008, Ventura made his MLB debut in 2013 at 22.

Ventura developed into a key starter on the pitching staff that led the Kansas City franchise to the 2015 World Series championship.

He played all four of his MLB seasons with the Royals, compiling a 38-31 career record in 94 games and 93 starts at Major League level, with a 3.89 ERA and 1.34 WHIP.
